Propulsion System Engineer
Location: Athens, Greece (initially remote-friendly)
Sector: Mechanical / Aerospace Engineering R&D
Type of contract: Part-time or freelance to start, with a clear path to full-time
Start date: Q3 2025
Job Description: Lexion is a deep-tech company developing the APEX (Airbreathing Pulsed Explosions) engine — a radically new combined-cycle propulsion system based on pulsed combustion that begins as an airbreathing engine and transitions seamlessly to rocket mode, serving as a key enabler for future Single Stage to Orbit (SSTO) launch systems.
We are seeking a System Engineer to support the development of the APEX engine by contributing to the definition, architecture, and integration of its subsystems. This role involves translating propulsion concepts into structured subsystem requirements and system layouts, while guiding junior designers through the development of draft and detailed designs.
Your focus will be on system-level coordination, ensuring that all subsystems operate together as a coherent, high-performance propulsion system.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the system-level definition of the APEX engine and its major subsystems
- Translate concepts into organized requirements and layouts
- Evaluate design options and contribute to the selection of suitable subsystems
- Guide junior designers in the development of draft and detailed designs
Required Qualifications:
- Degree in Aerospace Engineering or a related field
- Familiarity with propulsion system architectures and subsystems
- Ability to translate design concepts into subsystem-level requirements
- Experience with tools for rapid concept evaluation (e.g., Python, MATLAB)
- Working knowledge of CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks)
- Strong organizational and communication skills to guide junior team members
- Excellent command of English, including technical writing
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience with propulsion-related R&D projects or experimental setups
- Familiarity with system modeling tools (e.g., Simulink, Modelica, or SysML-based environments)
- Experience collaborating in multidisciplinary teams (e.g., propulsion–structure–thermal interaction)
- Involvement in early-stage aerospace development (e.g., university lab, startup, or funded research program)
What We Offer - Competitive salary based on experience and qualifications
- A core role in a high-potential aerospace startup supported by ESA BIC Greece and strategic partners
- Flexibility to start part-time or freelance, with a path to deeper long-term involvement
- Access to academic research infrastructure, testing facilities, and a growing expert network
- A hands-on, first-principles engineering culture with freedom to shape and lead innovation
